A production specifically designed to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Cathay Organisation, the story of Our Sister Hedy was transposed to modern-day Singapore, featuring a cast of multilingual Singaporean and Malaysian actors who spice up the English script with their comical potpourri of Southeast Asian dialects and accents. Unlike the plot of the original 1957 version, the drama of this updated remake centres on the storms in the teacups whipped up by the controlling mother, who projects her own worries and expectations of career and marriage onto her four daughters. Their circumstances are given an update in keeping with the times: Big sis falls for a divorcé; Second sis quits her high-paying job to pursue her dream career as a chef; Third sis assumes Julie Yeh Feng's original role as a social butterfly; Little sis is a homebody computer geek. Their experiences in love and work, tinged with bittersweetness and a hearty dose of sourness and heat, are punctuated by moments of comic relief supplied by its culturally and racially mixed context. The film also pays homage to Grace Chang, the glamourous screen goddess of Cathay's golden era, who made a rare appearance on screen some 51 years after her retirement and reminisced Cathay's good old days.
