Years-long search for a film print of this sequel to Our Sister Hedy has proved futile, which makes this screening all the more precious. The sequel follows Doe's delicately crafted narrative that scrutinizes the myth of marital bliss to minute detail, by first training the lens on Big sis (Mu Hong) who is racked with insecurity over her husband's suspected infidelity, then moving on to Second sis (Julie Yeh Feng) and her husband (Peter Chen Ho) whose unfounded jealousy opens a can of worms. Yet it is Hedy (Jeanette Lin Tsui) who steals the show, the smooth operator who helps iron out the marital troubles of her sisters. Sparks fly and tempers flare when their opposing temperaments and likes and dislikes collide in a tour de force of witty, barbed dialogues. The ending of their dying father fulfilling his final wish by walking Hedy down the aisle on her wedding day does get a tad overly sentimental, but fairly so. This digital beta was scanned from an incomplete 35mm print, with 20 minutes missing, but the chance to view Hedy and sisters in all its Eastmancolor glory more than makes up for this slight disappointment.
