Based on Cheng Wai's novel, Four Sisters, the film explores the lives and loves of four sisters with widely different personalities whose paths entwine and diverge. They finally reconcile with each other after a series of setbacks and discords. The script casts the four actresses in roles that fit perfectly like a glove, just as it was custom-written to work their individual personas and charisma into scenes of domestic bliss. The camera loves Jeanette Lin Tsui with her natural delivery as the bright, frank and intelligent Hedy, while Julie Yeh Feng, vanity and siren impersonated, secures her spot in the limelight alongside Mu Hong and Dolly Soo Fung, who inhabit and shine as the dutiful, forbearing big sis and the well-behaved if plain youngest daughter. The film stands out for its measured screenwriting and sure-handed directing, coupled with well-paced execution and spot-on casting. The music scores and accompaniment by Kei Shang-tong are exhilarating, injecting a burst of energy and a touch of Westernised comic flair into a time-honoured family-romance.
