Peng Meifen (Helen Li Mei), Xu Manli (Kitty Ting Hao) and Zhao Shuxian (Wang Lai) are flatmates and best friends. Shuxian is a forsaken wife with a son (Peter Dunn) sick in hospital to care for. Manli, whose relationship with boyfriend Li Jiahua (Tian Qing) has fallen into boring routines, harbours fantasies over her Singaporean penfriend. Meifen has been so distraught over the death of her love to let a new man into her heart. More unexpected familial and romantic complications follow with the appearance of the repentant husband and the penpal... An exquisite account of young and tender love with heavy petit-bourgeois leanings, the film immediately recalls Doe Ching's Our Sister Hedy (1957), its portrayal of three contrasting personalities with a delicate, sensitive touch affords an equally compelling variations on the previous sister personas. Peter Dunn as the delicate melancholic and sentimental child lends the film an extra spark of warmth and affection.
