Her Tender Heart is one of the best Hong Kong films about divorce and it takes an actress as accomplished as Wang Lai to make the whole thing work. Wang plays a wife who abandoned her husband and daughter, returning years later trying to re-establish ties with the daughter. The film, if anything, is a showcase for acting, as all three members of the family are imbued with humanity and each with a unique nobility and weakness. Wang inhabits her role with profound subtlety and delicate refrain while also supplementing the wonderful performances of Wang Yin, who plays the husband, and Lucilla You Min, the daughter.
