Seminar 1 <On Pioneering Experience — Cinematic Storyboards in the 80s>

Storyboards gained importance in filmmaking since the 70s and 80s in Hong Kong. David Chan is among the pioneers of storyboard drawing. A frequent collaborator with Michael Hui in designing for Hui's directorial titles, Chan will share his experience in his eventful career as a storyboard artist and production designer, and discuss the indispensable role of storyboard in the old days of Hong Kong cinema.

David Chan
A renowned Chinese calligrapher, David Chan began storyboarding for the film Game of Death (1978) and has since worked in many Peter Yung's films, including The System (1979) and Life After Life (1981). In 1978, Chan worked as art director for Michael Hui's The Contract and went on to be the production designer for Hui's films such as Security Unlimited (1981) and Teppanyaki (1984).

Seminar 2 <Storyboards of Hong Kong Cinema — A Panorama>

The recent decade sees the advancement of computer special effects in Hong Kong films, resulting also in the growing significance of storyboard in the creative process. The seminar gathers three storyboard artists active in the scene to share their experience and insights in the profession.

Elphonso Lam
Elphonso Lam is a multidisciplinary artist working with media like music and graphic design. He worked in the comic industry and rose to the position of chief writer and produced such celebrated works as The Jam and Super Seven. Recent years saw Lam try his hand at film storyboarding, with his first project being Due West: Our Sex Journey (2012), and others including Tales from the Dark 2 (2013), Iceman (2014) and Undercover Duet (2015).

Luk Wai-cheong
A veteran designer of computer special effects and storyboard artist, Luk Wai-cheong has participated in more than fifty films. He spent his formative years working as a comic artist and gained reputation for his airbrush comic covers. He obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in animation in the United Kingdom, before joining the film industry and created computer special effects for The Storm Riders (1998). Luk's storyboard works include those for The Legend of Zu (2001), Helios and Monster Hunt (both 2015).

Chung Kai-kit
A storyboard artist currently active for films, Chung Kai-kit once worked as a comic artist and advertising storyboard artist. His creative debut in film storyboarding was Silver Hawk (2003). Over the past decade he drew for nearly thirty films to date, including CJ7 (2008), Mural (2011), The Four I-III (2012-14), Kung Fu Jungle (2014) and Two Thumbs Up (2015).
