Hsia Moon proved her versatility with an expanding character range with this testing role as Chen Bailu, a courtesan who is hooked up on alcohol-fuelled nights of merry-making, until a visit from his childhood sweetheart Feng Dasheng (Fu Che) haunts her with memories of her simple, self-contained former self. Resolved to leave behind her decadent life, she inadvertently comes to the rescue of an orphaned girl Xiao Dong Xi (Betty Loh Ti), a sober reflection of her young self, and becomes all the more determined to marry Feng and start anew. Yet a crisis looms ahead. Hsia delivered a flawless turn as the courtesan, who, behind the facade of opulence and glamourous clothes and makeup, insinuates herself into the confidence of a bank tai-pan, a rich matriarch, a kept man and a mob boss inhabiting a shadowy, murky world of no return…
