During the Warring States period, a poor peasant girl Yu (Hsia Moon) exiled from her defeated state Zhao to Wei and is adopted by Hou (Su Qin). She becomes bosom friends with Hou's daughter, Hejian (Betty Loh Ti) and wins the love of Lord Xinling (Ping Fan), who has Hou among the retainers in his hospitality. Lord Xinling urges King Wei (Jiang Ming) to send troops to help Zhao, but the king refuses, instead desiring Yu as an imperial concubine. Yu goes along begrudgingly for the greater good of her mother state. Following the adroit ruse suggested by Hou, Yu intoxicates the king and steals the Tiger Commander's Tally which enables Xinling to lead the Wei troops to break the siege laid on Zhao. A script Jin Yong (Louis Cha) custom-wrote for Hsia Moon, earning the leading lady a title synonymous with the film's name. Yu is a complex, intense character, a selfless and fervent patriot and lover with a beauty that goes much more than skin deep. Hsia consumed the role and nailed it.
