Princess Sheng Ping, Emperor Daizong of Tang's spoiled-rotten daughter who is married to meritorious General Guo Ziyi's sixth son Guo Ai (Ting Sai-chun), browbeats her consort into performing the ritual of bowing every night. When she refuses to attend the banquet of the general's 70th birthday, Ai, having bottled up his anger, finally snaps and gives her a slap. A teary-eyed Sheng Ping airs her grievance with the emperor, who brings the pampered daughter to her senses by pretending to sentence Ai to death. Panic reduces her to pleading for leniency and the couple reconcile. Hsia's commanding stage presence and theatrics, alongside the accomplished Ting Sai-chun (dubbed the Yam Kim-fai of Yue opera), are a match in heaven, deftly fusing Yue operatic artistry with mise-en-scene to propel the action and lend an entertaining streak to the plot.
