Chivalrous heroine Liu Jinding is made Emperor Jiajing's godsister for subduing the sea brigands. While Liu pays obeisance to the gods in the imperial temple, Feng Jiajin (Ting Sai-chun), son of the ministry of revenue, hides inside the statue chamber to pry on the worshipper. Love strikes as soon as the two part ways. As Liu's lovesickness exasperates the host of royal doctors, Feng poses as a healer to gain access to her boudoir in a dramatic, intrigue-filled romantic pursuit…. A visual treat for non-operatic fans alike, Li Pingqian's rendition of Yue opera in crisp, fluid cinematography offers a unique blending of the original theatrical format and cinematic sensibilities. The sets, costumes, props and lighting are minimalist and subtly coloured. Aesthetically exquisite in its understated style, this is arguably Li's most outstanding work among his late operatic films. Hsia is chivalric heroine and ethereal beauty rolled into one, looking regal in period costumes.
