The Capture of the Evil Demons

The Capture of the Evil Demons

Dir: Wong Hok-sing
Cast: Chan Ho-kau, Lam Kar-sing, Man Lan, Fen Ju Hua, Connie Chan Po-chu
1962 / B&W / D Beta / Cantonese / 92min

Chan Ho-kau had the privilege of receiving the tutelage of two masters: Cantonese opera virtuoso Chiu Lan-fong and Peking opera maestro Fen Ju Hua. Chan's all-action persona finds full expression in her role as Clam Spirit, displaying her talent in spin-ups, ribbon dance and banner-waving. Clam Spirit falls in love with scholar Yin Yuk-hoi (Lam Kar-sing) and abducts him to the crystal palace. Yin escapes from the forced marriage and returns to land only to find his lover Choi So-fong (Man Lan) harassed by Serpent Spirit. The lovers are saved from their pursuers by their master, Madam Chiu (Fen Ju Hua), and their fellow disciples. In retaliation, the two devils flood Sizhou City. Madam Chiu, disguised as a tea vendor, serves them poisonous tea which saps them of their powers and shames them into repentance. In recognition of her good deeds, Chiu is enthroned among the deities and gives her blessing to the nuptials of Choi and Yin. An adaptation of Peking opera, the film is a breathtaking feat of northern-school acrobatic theatrics and Fen's balancing act with water buckets stands out as particularly impressive. In addition to Chan Ho-kau, the film also stars other Fen's protégées, including Connie Chan Po-chu, Shum Chi-wah and Cheung Lo-lo (alias Cheung Fei-yin). This film is also chosen as a tribute to Lam Kar-sing, who passed away in August.
