Adapted from a Tai Lung Fung Opera Troupe play of the same title. Mak Bing-wing and Fung Wong Nui, principal attractions of the opera troupe, breathed life and charm into a signature staple in their repertoire: an all gongs-and-drums drama that follows the age-old tradition of Cantonese opera and yet thrills with suspense and twists and turns. The main plot centres on the tangled romance between Man Chui-kwan (Fung Wong Nui), daughter of a famed general of the Chu Kingdom and Qi general Lau Siu-tin (Mak Bing-wing). The film kicks off with Siu Yuet-ngo (Chan Ho-kau), giving birth on her wedding day and Man, her sworn sister, trying to cover her up by acknowledging herself as the mother. An accumulation of lies lead Man to accuse Lau of impregnating Siu, which escalates to a full-blown duel as the two kingdoms declare war on each other... Fung, attired in her glamorous grand armour (dakao), proved herself the consummate artist strutting her operatic stuff: cartwheels, somersaults, wielding pheasant plumes – and lifting up her co-star Mak in one of her acrobatic moves to boot!
