Armed with a rock solid foundation in Cantonese operatic art and techniques, Fung Wong Nui began her career playing mui heung (bit parts) and worked her way up the opera ranks to become a versatile leading dan. In her role as the heroic Muk-lan, Fung was able to unleash her own brand of stage wizardry at her dazzling best: sword and dagger play, spear dance and ma dang zi (a set of actions with horsewhip). The film is based on The Ballad of Mulan, a folk poem about a young woman who takes her aged father's place in the army. In the film, Fa Muk-lan is joined by compatriots Lau Yuen-to (Mak Bing-wing) and Wong Chung-yee (Chan Kam-tong) on her way to the army and the trio quickly rise through the ranks in recognition of their valour on the battlefields. Muk-lan develops amorous feelings for her comrade Yuen-to and resolves her dilemma by contracting a betrothal for a lookalike sister and Yuen-to. Following his triumphant return, the general visits Muk-lan's family and asks for the hand of his fiancée, who, to his delight, turns out to be Muk-lan stripped of her disguise. All's well that ends well – Muk-lan is pardoned at the joint petition of the generals and free to tie the knot with Yuen-to.
