Be sure you arrive early enough to enjoy the opening sequence in its full glory: clad in a grand armour (dakao), Yu So-chow can be seen performing a choreographed martial arts series of rapid cartwheels and agile somersaults. The drama kicks off with To Kam-ngo (Yu So-chow) lodging a grievance against the emperor's father-in-law Poon Hung (Leng Chi-pak) for the murder of her husband, Seventh Son Yeung. Eighth High Lord (Luk Fei-hung) urges Emperor Song to conduct a thorough investigation. The shrewd Duke Fuyin Hin (Chan Kam-tong) devises a plan to arrest Hung, while the Manchu official Kau Chun (Mak Bing-wing) is appointed to preside over the case. The emperor eschews sentencing the member of royalty to death and leaves it to Kau to decide his fate. Meanwhile, in the wake of the Jin invasion, Grand Matriarch Sei marshals To and the Yeung troops to the frontier on the emperor's order. Kau seizes the chance and authorises Hung to be drafted to fight at the borders, thereby setting the stage for To to exact revenge. The period drama is bookended by two fantastic fight sequences, while the narrative momentum and dynamics are driven by a stellar cast of operatic stars.
