This adaptation of the renowned Qing Dynasty play traces the tragic story of courtesan Li Xiangjun (Patricia Lam Fung) and anti-Qing rebel Hou Chaozong (Law Kim-long). When corrupted Qing officials force Xiangjun to write a letter convincing Chaozong to change his loyalties, Xiangjun refuses and hits her head on the pillar, leaving blood spots on the fan that serves as the symbol of their love. To protect Xiangjun's life, Chaozong does the unthinkable. Despite being the least experienced opera performer in the main cast, Patricia Lam Fung exudes surprising confidence in the film's opera scenes, holding her own opposite co-stars (and professional Cantonese opera performers) Law Kim-long and Lam Kar-sing, and her ability to express the compassionate side of Xiangjun at such a young age is a testament to her consummate talent. Featuring excellent music and solid direction by Chow Sze-luk, this is one of Shaw Brothers' finest Cantonese opera films.
