Thanks to its large ethnic Chinese population, Southeast Asia was a major market for Hong Kong Cantonese films. To capture the audiences there, Shaw Brothers sent its crew to the region to film The Fragrance of Durians (1959) and this film. In addition to succeeding in their intended market, these films were also a breath of fresh air for Hong Kong audiences. Named after the bridge in Singapore, Chow Sze-luk's melodrama follows the romance between a much-adored songstress Yim-mui (Patricia Lam Fung) and a poor artist Man-wei (Cheung Ying-choi). Soon after Yim-mui sends Man-wei abroad for school, Yim-mui's spoiled brother (Mak Kay) teams up with a rich businessman to force Yim-mui into prostitution. Lam is simply electrifying as the strong-willed, optimistic young woman who can stand up to any obstacle life throws in her way.
