Adapted from the TVB drama 73 (1973-76) and following in the wake of the box-office success of The House of 72 Tenants (1973), this film brings together the TV and movie stars of TVB and Shaw Brothers, and explores Hong Kong society in 1973 by combining short situation dramas into a film-length work. The big news of the day include the stock market collapse, the anti-corruption campaign and landslides, while the smaller issues are livelihood issues such as the gambling craze, crowded hospitals and soaring crime rate. The themes are rich and familiar and interpreted in a lively and humorous manner. The problems of the economic takeoff are dealt with by evoking the forgotten moral spirit of Cantonese cinema, and the spirit of helping one another as demonstrated by the film In the Face of Demolition (1953). Director Chor Yuen handles the crowd and chaotic scenes with mastery.
