When it comes to the erotic films of Shaw Brothers, one must mention Lui Kay (the other two are directors Li Han-hsiang and Ho Fan). This film came out in the mid-70s, during the rise of Hong Kong erotic films. Lui uses the nightclub scene in the beginning to introduce the relationships between the different characters. This is followed by the parallel portrayal of the passion and betrayals of the couples. This film thematizes the modern society with its rich men and pretty women, and the dramatic social changes of the time (a time of transition compared to the 1960s in which Lui achieved stardom). Diverse causes are responsible for the fates of the four women (played by Wang Pingping, Chen Ping, Tina Chin Fei and Maggie Li) who move among different men. Made before the X-rated pornos that came about thanks to Lui Kay, this film is more soft porn than erotic. Lui introduces an element of irony by playing the handicapped husband. The film highlights the contradiction between sexual desire and morality.
