Based on the historical events of the Jingnan Rebellion in the early years of the Ming Dynasty, the film combines them with a wuxia plot and spy plot into an adventure story. At her late father's request, Shangguan Xiuyi (Cheng Pei-pei) and her father's protégé Jin Zhenxiong (Wu Fung) escorts the crown prince of the Ming royal family to the house of his sworn brothers, so that he may one day reclaim the throne. On the way, they are hunted by the court. Fortunately, the chivalrous and clever Zhao Feiyuan (Elliot Yueh Hua) comes to their rescue. The two parties engage in a battle of wits and tactics as the exciting plot progresses. Lo Wei later specialised in martial arts film at Shaw Brothers. Combining the plots of his previous spy films and themes of family feuds, his films embody the wuxia spirit and were mostly box-office hits, making him a leading Shaw director.
