The well-known story of the incorruptible judge Pao Cheng was fictionalised in the Qing dynasty novel Three Knights-errant and Five Rats, later adapted into Seven Knights-errant and Five Rats. They praise the knights-errant's heroic deeds and highlight the existence of good and evil people in both the court and the jianghu. The film version directed by Hsu Tseng-hung was written by Ting Shan-hsi, and is characterised by smooth editing, a fast pace and a condensed plot, with one conflict after another, with which the average TV version cannot compare. Judge Pao (Ching Miao) and Chan Chao (Chang Yi) are merciful and righteous, representing the traditional virtues against the haughty Brocade Rat Pai Yu-tang (Chiao Chuang). The rivalry between Chan Chao the Imperial Cat and the Five Rats, as well as their united hunt of the rapist and murderer (Lo Lieh), are extremely thrilling. Righteous government agents and chivalrous swordsmen join forces in order to bring evil to justice.
