A mischievous Emperor (Chao Lei) takes a trip to Jiangnan and encounters the gorgeous Li Feng (Linda Lin Dai) at a village parade. After consummating their love, the two are forced to separate due to the Emperor's regal duties, leaving Li Feng to care for their illegitimate child while pining for the love of her life. Sensing the rise in popularity for Huangmei Diao (Yellow Plum Tunes), Li Han-hsiang convinced Shaw Brothers and Run Run Shaw to spare no expense for this exquisitely filmed musical. Filled with stunningly beautiful sets and costumes (by Chan Ki-yui and Lu Shihou, respectively), the film would become one of Li's most successful Huangmei Diao (Yellow Plum Tunes). Featuring a mesmerizing performance by Linda Lin Dai, The Kingdom and the Beauty also turned the iconic actress into a superstar.
