Ching Li gives a breakthrough performance as a woman who develops schizophrenia after her pilot boyfriend dies in an accident. Based on a novel by Guo Sifen, this 1968 film combines romance, psychological drama and a mysterious thriller into a wildly stylish ride through the dark corners of a disturbed mind. Despite the heavy subject matter, writer-director Doe Ching lends a light touch to the story by inserting musical sequences and a dreamlike youth romance. Doe's creative use of colours and symbolism as his way of showing us the heroine's dizzying delusions was also considered a breakthrough in cinematic language at the time.
