In 1957, Run Run Shaw landed in Hong Kong, and started recruiting talent in directing, writing and acting. He achieved impressive results within a few years. Director Lo Chen, who joined Shaw Brothers in 1961, was skilled at social melodramas. After the hits The Rose of Summer (1961) and Kiss for Sale (1961), he made Her Sister's Keeper based on a novelette. To put her younger sister Huilan (Margaret Tu Chuan) through college, Huilian (Grace Ting Ning) became a taxi dancer and is despised by Huilan. Now married to a good husband (Kwan Shan), the lonely Huilan falls for a man after her money. To protect her younger sister, Huilian puts herself at risk. Grace Ting Ning plays a sad role, as the noble sister who keeps her purity in a cesspool. The role of the headstrong younger sister seems tailor-made for Margaret Tu Chuan, famed for playing "hot chicks". This was Kwan Shan's first film at Shaw Brothers after his departure from Great Wall Movie Enterprises. He plays a general manager busy with constructing "the most luxurious building in South East Asia", shuttling between Singapore and Europe, rather like the executives of Shaw Brothers.
