Among the directors at Below the Lion Rock, Allen Fong had the most unique style. In addition to classic episodes like The Wild Child (1977) and Ode to Un Chau Chai (1977), Fong has also directed many hidden gems that we're uncovering as part of this programme. Through the stories of three footballers – each at a different point of their respective careers – Football explores the anxiety and difficulties behind the glamour of working in professional sports. In addition to exposing the city's traffic problems, The Hard Way reveals that the struggle to survive in a rapidly expanding city exists in all generations. Even though The Apprentices was created to promote the Government's new career training courses, Fong also tells a moving story about several distinctly different youths walking down diverging paths in life. Finally, It All Starts from a Crush is a morality tale about excessive erotic material in the public at the time as seen through the eyes of a heartbroken young man. Like his film work, Fong's Below the Lion Rock episodes are the perfect combinations of the drama and realism, telling fascinating stories with memorable characters and a wide variety of socially relevant topics.
