Millionaire Albert Durant (Adolphe Menjou) dons the guise of a waiter to get close to the Russian Duchess (Florence Vidor) and finally wins her heart after some whimsical twists and turns. Adapted from a French stage play, the film chiefly takes place within the VIP suite of a Parisian hotel. Adolphe Menjou adeptly inhabits the role of a dashing gentleman whose gazes of affection, coupled with yet a pair of funny eyebrows, easily win the audience over. Sit Kok-sin, with his looks and his chops as a clown (chou) in Cantonese opera, portrays this endearing man perfectly in his celebrated role of ‘White Dragon'. While the 1933 film and its 1937 sequel tell entirely separate stories, the 1947 version is an extension of this American silent, in which the millionaire pretends he is poor to woo his girl.
