The Thin Man is a Hollywood classic cherished by fans and scholars alike. A screwball comedy disguised as a whodunit mystery, the film is marked by the vivid portrayal of a married couple, a soft-boiled but hard-drinking detective (William Powell) and his wife (Myrna Loy), an heiress whose wealth allows her husband to retire from the detecting to concentrate on the boozing. Adapted by the husband-and-wife team of scriptwriters Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich from a novel of the same title by famed noir author Dashiell Hammett, who supposedly based The Thin Man on his long-time relationship with the renowned playwright Lillian Hellman, the lovingly playful and seductively flippant relationship in the film is considered one of film history's most memorable and influential portraits of husband-and-wife rapport.
