The winner of Best Film at the BAFTA Award and nominee for Best Screenplay at the Academy Awards, this Russian wartime drama has been named one of scriptwriter Joyce Chan's favorite films. Set in Russia during World War II, the film follows a young soldier who has been granted a six-day leave to visit home after defeating two enemy tanks. On his journey, he encounters separated lovers, broken families and other ways that the war has devastated his country. At the same time, there is warmth, hope and even love on the young man's path. There's no propaganda to be found here; just a simple, gentle story about individuals caught in circumstances beyond their control. One can see the film's influence on Chan's works, particularly in her attention to details and her care for ordinary people fighting against the odds with their heads held high.
