Set in the 1970s, this overlooked gem is about stripper Giu (Carrie Ng) and a mentally handicapped man named Biscuit (Wong He) making ends meet by becoming con artists. As always, writer Raymond To has a talent for writing women, and his depiction of Giu here is no exception. Though the film starts out as a nonsensical odd couple comedy, it eventually reveals its true nature in delightfully surprising ways. The scene in which Giu is forced to perform a striptease for a group of policemen – one of them being her long-lost son – provides a devastatingly motional climax to the story, and To's ability to naturally shift back to humor in the end is further proof of his genius. Just like life, this film is filled with both laughs and tears.
