Chan Man-keung returns to his forte of characterisations, convincingly portraying a career-family woman who wakes up every day seemingly just to tackle one problem after another. The middleaged widower Ah Ngor (Josephine Siao), who works just as hard at her job as she does at home, is on the verge of breaking as the pressure from living with and caring for her father-in-law, suffering from Alzheimer's, mounts. Siao handles her role with as much grace as humour, while Roy Chiao's portrayal of the sweet and cheeky father-in-law with Alzheimer's brings both laughs and tears to the screen. What Ann Hui describes are the tensions and attachment between people and the need for deeper understanding, patience and forgiveness, through which we can contemplate the fragility of life and the importance of family. The film won the Silver Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival, as well as Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter, Best Actor and Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
