Director and screenwriter Alex Law has repeatedly said that before making a film about his own childhood (which he finally accomplished with Echoes of the Rainbow in 2010), he would experiment by making a film dramatising the childhood of superstars Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. The character of Siu Ming, a childhood enemy and companion of the Seven Little Fortunes, who implies Law himself, is added to the script. The life of this modern child is a big contrast to the poor kids undergoing hard training in an opera troupe. The film is full of diaspora and nostalgic elements that are trademarks of Alex Law. He deals with themes such as the gradual replacement of traditional opera by pop music, the decline of the Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park, immigration to the US and the closure of the drama school. The plot is also enriched by two love lines related to the master and Lung. The various stories are told in a brisk pace. By delving into the details of everyday life, Law shows how that generation pursued their dreams in a harsh environment, giving a magnificent account of a coming-of-age tale in the 60s.
