Writer Alex Law and director Mabel Cheung bring their own experiences of being Hong Kongers living abroad (Both were students at New York University) to An Autumn's Tale, the second film of their "migrant trilogy." Cherie Chung stars as Jennifer, a Hong Kong girl who goes to New York for her studies and her boyfriend (Danny Chan). When she finds out that he's been cheating on her, Jennifer has no choice but rely on the generosity of a distant relative Samuel (Chow Yun-fat). Unkempt, vulgar and loud, Samuel is clearly in a different world from Jennifer, but the two manage to form a bond over time that may even become love. Capturing the voices of the Hong Kong diaspora, Law's impeccably structured script cleverly uses humor to drive its story and keep its audience enthralled. The result is a true Hong Kong cinema classic that is at once funny and moving.
