The Youth

The Youth

Dir/Scr: Chor Yuen
Cast: Nam Hung, Kenneth Tsang Kong, Paul Chu, Fang Xin
1969 / Colour / D Beta / Cantonese / Chi & Eng subtitles / 94min

When Cantonese cinema reached a point of crisis, Chor Yuen, Nam Hung, Kenneth Tsang Kong and other actors came to its rescue with a new production company. The company's first production (along with Chor Yuen's Wise Wives and Foolish Husbands) is a cautionary tale about young university students who spend their days chasing vanity, vice and crime. Made well into Hong Kong's rapid economic development in the 1960's, the film depicts Hong Kong society's decline in ethics and traditional values as people begin to obsess over money and materialistic needs. Similar to Lung Kong's Teddy Girls (also made in 1969), this film is a reflection of the troubles and anxieties experienced by disillusioned youths following the evastating riots in 1967.
