Yam Kim-fai might have made mostly costume films, but she had also appeared in her fair share of works with contemporary settings. Young Mother features the cherished Yam-Pak-Po package, with Yam playing againist favourite co-star Pak Suet-sin and complemented by the great character actor Leung Sing-po. The story of a woman who suffers 20 years of hardship is typically melodramatic, but Pak's performance as two versions of the title character (a mother and her daughter, who also becomes a mother) is outstanding. Her chemistry with Yam, agreeably handsome in modern clothing, is also evident.
