Yu Lai-zhen was a famed dao ma dan with considerably acrobatic skills. Her collaborations with the easygoing Yam Kim-fai usually find her dominating the proceedings with showcases of her action prowess. Phoenix Terrace is an exception. This Chinese New Year release, with its well-wishing Chinese title, features Yam as a feeble son ill-treated by his mean stepmother and Yu as a sympathetic maid. Yam is comfortable embodying the suffering in both acting and singing and Yu proves effective in her more subdued role.
