Yam Kim-fai was a wen wu sheng, the kind of opera leading men with both dramatic and acrobatic training. In Two Generals in Contention for a Wife, she is paired with Tang Bik-wan, who usually plays a strong-willed woman. The story is set in a vague historical era of warring states, Yam playing a general in a benign state and Tang the princess to whom he is bequeathed. The other general in the title is actually a king, that of a powerful and aggressive state. Playing the lovelorn general allows Yam to put on display both his wen and wu sides, one against the princess and the other against the king.
