Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom is one of the best Cantonese opera films ever made. Based on the highly acclaimed Cantonese opera staged by Yam Kim-fai and Pak Suet-sin's Sin Fung Ming Opera Troupe and in turn adapted from the Yuan opera Tale of Red Pear Flower, it is written by the great librettist Tong Tik-sang in his signature eloquence and directed with fluid elegance by Lee Tit, one of Cantonese cinema's best. Yam and Pak, after years of working closely together, reach the peak of their collaborative artistry, brought in turn to even more magical height by the masterfully understated performance of Leung Sing-po, their performances retaining the stylizations of opera while adapting to the realism of film. A near-perfect marriage of two art forms.
