Five Years of Film Digitisation

To align with the development of the digital era, the Hong Kong Film Archive (the Archive) has been actively promoting the digitisation of its film collection, aiming to preserve and pass on Hong Kong’s cinematic heritage. Supported by a HK$20 million funding allocation in the 2019 Budget Speech, the Archive launched a five-year archival digitisation programme. Under this initiative, 150 film titles from the collection, many of which were sole copies or in poor condition, were successfully converted into the latest digital cinema format. This project also provided a valuable opportunity for experienced film technicians to pass on the craft of film checking to a new generation of technical personnel. With the successful completion of the programme, the list of digitised titles is presented below for reference.

Please note that some celluloid films are in suboptimal condition due to their age and a lack of proper preservation in their early years; consequently, the audio and visual quality may affect the viewing experience. Your kind understanding is much appreciated. Except for some titles that remain temporarily unavailable due to copyright or other constraints, the rest are available for booking and viewing at the Resource Centre.
