Dr Sun Yat-sen devoted his life to revolution, aspiring to save the nation and its people, and made indelible contributions to the Chinese nation. His tireless figure in the revolutionary survives through film pioneer Lai Man-wai’s lens. Between 1921 and 1928, Lai Man-wai led a film crew to follow in Dr Sun Yat-sen across the country, capturing historic moments including Dr Sun’s inspection tour of Guangdong, the Northern Expedition, and his passing. Lai Man-wai edited the precious footage into feature length and shown publicly as A Page of History. Unfortunately, the negatives of the film were lost during the war yet some footage was preserved by his family and donated by Lai’s descendants to the Hong Kong Film Archive for permanent preservation.

To commemorate the 160th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s birth in 2026, the Archive has undertaken a special 4K digital restoration of the film, significantly enhancing both its visual and audio quality. Chinese subtitles have also been added for easy understanding. We look forward to sharing this hard-won and precious piece of historical moving image with our audience.
