The HKFA is collaborating with the Muse Fest HK this year to present a screening in November 2026. In line with this year's theme, "Hong Kong Story", the pioneering work of the Hong Kong New Wave, Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain (1983) (4K Digitally Restored Version) is selected for illustrating the transformation of Hong Kong from a historic gateway into a world-renowned international metropolis.
Tsui Hark’s fascination with wuxia reaches new heights with Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain, inspired by Huanzhu Louzhu’s Legend of the Swordsmen of the Mountains of Shu. Blending together elements of Chinese history, wuxia, and fantasy, the film features ground-breaking special effects by Hollywood experts who had worked on Star Wars (1977) as well as a specialised team who developed numerous practical effects. The result is a wildly imaginative and spectacular fantastical vision that is distinctly Eastern in flavour.
This is a screening of the 4K digital restoration of the film presented by the Hong Kong Film Archive, accompanied by the short feature ‘Restoration Story’. It will “wander” over to the Museum of Art, with a post-screening talk featuring the film’s special sound effect artist Henry Chung, and veteran film critics Joyce Yang, who will unveil the film’s special effects and share behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Through this Crossover Collaboration, we hope the audience might come into contact with and get a cursory overview of crossover culture via the museums.
