‘Discovering ICH Through Cinema’—Special Screening of The Dutiful Daughter Chu-chu & The Story of Heroine Fan Lei-fa

Introduction

Among Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage, the performing art of Cantonese opera has the deepest ties with cinema. Through light and shadow, the majestic resonance of gongs and drums, delightful melodies, and the actors’ unique vocal styles as well as mesmerising gestures and movements are transposed from the stage to the silver screen, where they remain equally captivating. To mark ‘Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Month’, the Hong Kong Film Archive is presenting free screenings of two classics starring Connie Chan Po-chu: The Dutiful Daughter Chu-chu (1966) and The Story of Heroine Fan Lei-fa (1968). While the common thread of Cantonese opera runs through both features, they diverge greatly in style, allowing audiences to appreciate this profound and exquisite artistic heritage through the medium of film.

The Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Office will organise the "Hong Kong ICH Month 2026" from 30 May to 30 June this year. Under the theme "ICH Around Town", the event features a series of diverse programmes designed to give the public and tourists a deeper understanding of ICH, thereby putting into practice the concept of "shaping tourism with cultural activities and promoting culture through tourism". For details, please visit the website https://www.icho.hk/en/web/icho/hk_ich_month_2026.html.

The programme is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series. The LCSD has long been promoting Chinese history and culture through organising an array of programmes and activities to enable the public to learn more about the broad and profound Chinese culture.
