Now widely regarded as a canonical masterpiece, The Godfather is Francis Ford Coppola’s most acclaimed crime drama, which uplifted the gangster film into the realm of tragic epic. With its richly layered narrative, the film chronicles the transfer of power within New York’s Corleone family. The ageing patriarch of this crime family, Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), a traditionalist guided by a personal code of loyalty, is gradually succeeded by his youngest son, Michael (Al Pacino). Initially a reluctant outsider and war hero, Michael’s transformation into a ruthless mafia leader reveals the corrosive effects of power.
Cinematographer Gordon Willis employs low-key lighting and deep shadows to striking effect, visually expressing the moral darkness at the heart of the underground world. The film’s use of parallel editing reaches its peak in the famous baptism sequence, intercut with a series of assassinations, an audacious juxtaposition that emphasises the theme of hypocrisy and the erosion of the so-called American Dream. The haunting score by Nino Rota lends the film a mournfully operatic quality, heightening its sense of grandeur and inevitability and cementing its status as an epic of family, loyalty and betrayal.
This screening features the 4K restoration specifically made for the film’s 50th anniversary, supervised by Coppola himself, presenting the film as closely as possible to his original vision.
