A representative auteur film of 1990s Hong Kong cinema, Center Stage sees Stanley Kwan joining forces with screenwriter Chiu Kang-chien to reinvent the biopic genre. The film reconstructs history from a contemporary perspective by blending fact and fiction through a meta-cinematic approach. It charts the life of Ruan Lingyu, the legendary star of China’s silent film era, tracing her rise to fame, her complex romantic life and her tragic downfall amid the pressures of a hostile tabloid culture in 1930s Shanghai. The splendour and pallor of the city are also vividly recreated in the film.

Maggie Cheung delivers a convincing performance as Ruan, seamlessly interwoven with archival footage of the 1930s actress herself. These sequences, alongside interviews with cast members reflecting on their roles, create a richly layered narrative that moves between past and present, screen and reality. Cheung brings out both Ruan’s melancholic beauty and her own contemporary allure, imbuing the figure with emotional depth after years of mythologisation. Kwan’s assured handling of the film’s intricate structure produces a work that is at once a homage to a legendary star and a dialogue on the pressures faced by women in the public eye.
