During her years at Shaw Brothers, Cheng Pei-pei frequently worked with director Lo Wei and actor Elliot Ngok, a partnership she described as an "ironclad trio". Their films were consistent box-office successes, each grossing more than one million, making the three a reliable formula for popularity. Dragon Swamp was another successful collaboration, in which Cheng took on the challenge of playing two roles in one film.

Cheng stars as Fan Ying, a swordswoman who falls into the villain’s romantic trap, helping him steal her master’s Jade Dragon Sword. When her master foils the theft, Fan is banished to the Dragon Swamp for 20 years. Two decades later, the precious sword is stolen again. Fan’s daughter, also played by Cheng, sets out to retrieve it. Along the way, she encounters the swordsman who has remained devoted to her mother (Elliot Ngok). Their quest takes them to the Dragon Swamp, where mother and daughter are finally reunited and join forces to confront the villain.

While firmly rooted in the wuxia genre, the film also explores the tender bond between mother and daughter, as well as the theme of devoted love. Playing two distinctly different women — one innocent and naïve, the other mature and sophisticated — Cheng demonstrates remarkable versatility in her acting, bringing both characters convincingly to life.
