Tears running down the cheeks as one continues to laugh is a sentiment shared by countless viewers of the second part of the Odyssey. As the story continues, Joker, with the Pandora’s Box, returns to the past trying in vain to rescue White Bone Demon. His last attempt brings him back to 500 years ago, where the box had been seized by Purple Glow Fairy (Athena Chu). To take the box back, Joker fakes his affection for Purple who turns out to be the love of his life. Ironically, in order to save his true love, Joker has to relinquish worldly desires to fulfil his pledge of guarding Longevity Monk on his scripture-seeking journey. The monk portrayed by Law Kar-ying has a speech rhythm and comedic sense entirely his own. His side-splitting rendition of Only You remains hilarious even decades on. Stephen Chow’s heartrending cries toward the film’s end make it clear that the "King of Comedy" is also a great actor. His signature line, "If there is an expiry date to this love we have, I hope it could be…10,000 years!" is a perfect endnote which, together with the theme song Love in a Life Time, encapsulates this doomed romance that spans 500 years.
