Young and Dangerous 3

Andrew Lau Wai-keung co-founded BoB and Partners Company with Wong Jing and Manfred Wong, and the new production company quickly found success with its adaptations of Cowman’s popular comic series. The Young and Dangerous films marked the first major peak in Lau’s directing career. Blending the youth genre with the conventions of triad films, the series centred on Chan Ho-nam, with Ekin Cheng in the role for which he is best remembered in Hong Kong cinema. The series steadily expanded its setting, moving from Hong Kong to Macau and Taiwan in Young and Dangerous 2, before reaching the Netherlands in Young and Dangerous 3. This geographical expansion also reflected the growing ambitions of BoB and Partners.

While continuing its tale of rivalries and loyalties within the criminal fraternity, Young and Dangerous 3 also explores the codes of conduct that govern the gangsters’ underworld, including respect for senior figures and the importance of brotherhood. It introduces a spiritual dimension through a pastor (Spencer Lam), a former drug addict whose daughter (Karen Mok) falls in love with Chicken (Jordan Chan Siu-chun), Chan Ho-nam’s close friend and one of the series’ central characters. Lau’s assured direction shines through in his meticulous mise-en-scène, fluid handheld camerawork, confident handling of large ensemble scenes, and evocative use of Hong Kong’s neon-lit nightscape, showing the growing confidence and maturity of his directing style.
