The Hong Kong Film Archive has long been dedicated to the acquisition, preservation, and promotion of Hong Kong's film history and culture. In 2026, as the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) celebrates its 25th anniversary, a special exhibition focusing on its film acquisition and restoration efforts will be held. This exhibition highlights cinematic treasures the Archive has collected from around the world, showcasing footage and related materials, along with oral history interviews with acquisition team members and donors, through multimedia installations. Visitors will be guided through the global footprints of Hong Kong cinema.
The exhibition recreates an overseas acquisition site and a ‘Film Vault Tunnel’ that imitates the film vault of the HKFA, offering immersive experiences that bring out the challenges of acquisition work and the environment of film preservation. It also features actual equipment used by professional conservators, introducing visitors to restoration procedures and the technical knowledge entailed. The HKFA partners with Hong Kong Design Institute, inviting their Digital Media students to design two games for the exhibition, allowing visitors to experience the fun of acquisition and conservation.
