To commemorate the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Hong Kong Film Archive organises a special programme every year, selecting works themed around the war and screening them free of charge. This year’s programme features two recently produced anti‑war films: The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru (2024), which investigates real historical events from the war, and Gezhi Town (2025), which tells the story of ordinary civilians joining forces to resist a common enemy. The former is a documentary, while the latter is a narrative feature. Together, they present different but equally valuable perspectives on the devastation brought by war, as well as the courageous spirit of people defending their homeland and standing united in resistance.
