Stories about young love are not always sunshine and rainbows. This film, adapted from the renowned novel by Yee Tat, a young writer who was popular in the 1960s, and directed by a then youthful Chor Yuen, is one such tragic tale.

Writer Chim Kei (Patrick Tse Yin) falls head over heels for Wong Mi-mi (Josephine Siao). He initially learns that she is the daughter of a wealthy family, but later discovers she is a taxi dancer. It is not until Wong’s younger sister, Annie (Wong Oi-ming), reveals to him that she sacrificed herself for her family that he casts aside his grievances and decides to marry her. Just when one thinks true love has finally triumphed over adversity, more obstacles befall the couple.

Siao portrays an enigmatic woman with depth, complexity, and versatility both externally and internally. Meanwhile, Wong also delivers a deeply moving performance as her younger sister with heartfelt sincerity.
