On the day of Choi-wan (Fung Wong Nui) and Mong-lun’s (Mak Bing-wing) wedding, her uncle (Cheng Kwan-min) and aunt (Leung Suk-hing) attempt to steal the family fortune by plotting with government officials. Mong-lun is forced to leave town to escape the law. Before leaving, he and Choi-wan consummate their marriage and she becomes pregnant. Choi-wan’s uncle then falsely accuses her of having an affair with Mong-lun’s friend (Siu Chung-kwan), shaming and forcing her to drown herself in a well…
Fung Wong Nui gives an impeccable performance in the role of a virtuous wife and mother, while at the same time displaying her beautiful singing. As she began taking on the position of female lead, she was increasingly cast in roles as kind-hearted, virtuous mothers. She played Fung Bo-bo’s mother in over 30 films.
Also worth noting is the fact that this was Tsui Siu-ming’s debut film, after Fung Wong Nui brought him into the film business. He had studied Cantonese opera and acting under Fung Wong Nui since he was 4 years old. Playing a street urchin in this film alongside other child actors, he manages to stand out and steal the limelight, displaying his considerable and precocious talent.
