This was Fung Wong Nui’s first detective thriller, adapted from a Rediffusion radio drama. Chung Wai-ming appears on the big screen to narrate the plot. A murder has happened on a train. The victim’s face has been damaged beyond recognition, but is believed to be the wealthy merchant Leung (Wong Hak). His daughter (Fung Wong Nui) is kidnapped while on the way to identify his corpse. Novelist Ma (Tso Tat-wah) is the prime suspect, but he believes the real killer is the Nine-Fingered Devil, and tries to solve the case himself…
Fung Wong Nui had played aggressive villainesses for years, but gives a refreshing turn as the mild-mannered daughter of a rich man. She shows aspects of her acting range rarely seen, effectively conveying her character’s fears, worries, and even—when meeting a former classmate—her girlish tenderness.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to view The Nine-Fingered Devil, which is being screened at the Archive for the first time. Please note that the image quality of parts of the film is short of ideal. We appreciate your understanding.
